Madera Canyon

History & Nature

Located 25 miles south of Tucson and 11 miles east of Green Valley, this mountainous break in the northwest face of the Santa Rita Mountains offers a generally temperate climate. During the winter, however, it allows access to snow for desert dwellers craving a little winter fun.

Things To Do

This spot is great for a quick day hike and picnic, or you can take advantage of the higher elevation for a longer period of time by setting up camp. Birders will especially enjoy the canyon, as it is known for being a migratory bird haven. The trail system can be accessed from the canyon’s campground and picnic areas.

Campsites are available on a first come, first served basis. There are also three nearby lodgings: Santa Rita Lodge, Madera Kudo Cabins, and Chuparosa B&B. All provide overnight accommodations.
